What to look for when buying a used car

There are plenty of guides on the internet telling you what to look for when buying a used car, covering everything from the documents in the glove box to under bonnet checks. However an important element often forgotten is the aftercare package to ensure worry free motoring. We at the WMS Group have compiled our top tips to ensure a fuss free motoring future.

Problem: Unfortunately the number of log-book loans, reports of previous vehicle identities and car clocking scams (falsifying the mileage of a vehicle) are on the rise, and the car you are proposing to buy may be disguising a multitude of sins.

Solution: Carrying out a full provenance check before purchasing a used vehicle will reveal any hidden past including outstanding finance arrangements, mileage problems and plate transfers, in addition to ensuring that it hasn’t been previously stolen or written off.

Problem: When buying a used car, the last thing you want is to drive off unaware of safety issues, such as worn out brakes or dangerously low fluid levels. Hidden faults can not only lead to costly repair bills down the line, but also endanger yourself and other road users.

Solution: A comprehensive multi-point car safety inspection – such as that offered as part of the WMS Group’s Safe and Sound package – covers everything from leaks in your fuel line to the condition of your power steering, which will rule out any underlying issues.

Problem: After you have made that all important used car purchase, feeling safe in the knowledge that if anything were to go wrong it’s not going to cost you a small fortune in repair costs.

Solution: An all mechanical and electrical car warranty package including unlimited claims and no excess contributions will allow you to drive away worry free and able to enjoy your new vehicle. Our Ultimate warranty also includes cover for wear & tear (subject to the age / mileage parameters), batteries and even diagnosis.

Problem: In the event of an unforeseen breakdown you want to be covered for all eventualities, whether stuck on your driveway or the roadside 100 miles from home. Joining a recovery service from the roadside can often cost you six times the amount with no room for negotiation.

Solution: A national rescue and recovery plan can keep the disruption of your journey to a minimum and potentially save you hundreds of pounds. Make sure you are covered from day one with the WMS Group’s range of recovery products.

Problem: You want to make sure you are paying a fair price for your next vehicle based on the variant, age, mileage and location.

Solution: An independent valuation from an experienced expert will provide you with a fair estimate as a reference point and ensure that you are paying the best possible asking price.

Finally, make sure your aftercare package includes a buy-back promise from the dealership. This means that regardless of the age, mileage and condition at the time, your dealership will agree to buy the vehicle back as a part exchange when you purchase another model from them. If that doesn’t demonstrate confidence in their vehicles, then we don’t know what will!
